Handling Offers with a Conversion Cap

Affiliate networks limit you with a number of conversions that you can have for a certain offer? The Conversion cap feature permits you to set a daily limit of conversions as well as choose the redirect offer. Without the need of monitoring it and manually switching between offers, you will not lose your traffic, when the affiliate network’s limit is exceeded.

With the Conversion cap toggle activated, you are able to set a daily number of conversions according to your affiliate network limits. When the limit of conversions is exceeded during the day, visitors, who are using this campaign’s offer, will be automatically redirected to the offer provided as the redirect offer.

Conversion caps are based on a maximum number of conversions per day. This means that the conversion cap resets upon a new day and automatically redirects traffic to the primary offer at midnight based on the selected time zone. You are able to define the time zone to match the one used by an affiliate network (as the daily cap should follow your affiliate network’s time settings).

Voluum Note: Before starting adding the offer with a limited number of conversions per day to Voluum, you need to:

  1. Have the redirect offer defined. In other words, you need to have at least one active offer added to Voluum. Note that you cannot add an archived offer as the redirect offer because when the daily cap of conversions is exceeded, the traffic will be redirected to this offer.
  2. Have the offer URL accessible for quick reference.

I. Add an Offer with a Conversion Cap

In order to add the offer where this a limited number of conversions per day, perform the following steps:

You can track the payout either dynamically or manually: 8a. Auto: You need to select this option, if you have added a payout parameter to the postback or pixel URL. Tracking values are sent via a postback URL/pixel request.
8b. Manual: You can also provide a fixed amount in the field in the offer’s configuration. Every time the conversion is recorded, the amount will be added to a total payout sum. 9. To enhance search functionality, you can always add tags to the offer.

Voluum Info: Remember that tags can only contain letters, numbers, and underscores.

10. In the Conversion cap section turn on the toggle to activate the Conversion cap feature: 10a. Provide the number of conversions per day in the Daily cap field.

Voluum Tip: If you have the offer that is temporarily unavailable and you need to redirect your traffic to the new offer, you can set the Daily cap limit to 0. As a result, all traffic will be immediately redirected to the redirect offer and your visitors will only see the redirect offer without the primary offer.

To learn how to pause the offer temporarily, go to the Pausing Temporarily Unavailable Offers in Campaigns guide.

10b. Select a time zone of the affiliate network from the Time zone drop-down menu.

Voluum Note: You need to take into account that daily cap limit in Voluum resets upon a new day based on the time zone selected from the Time zone drop-down menu. To count conversions accurately, the daily cap time zone in Voluum should match the time zone set in your affiliate network.

10c. From the Redirect offer drop-down menu select the offer to which the traffic should be redirected, after the daily conversion limit is exceeded.

11. Click the Save button. You have added the offer with the daily conversion limit.

II. Get the Postback URL

When you have added the offer to the Voluum platform, you need to define the postback URL that you are going to paste to the affiliate network. To do so, follow the steps:

1. In the Offers view click the Copy link in the Postback URL section.

2. Paste the copied postback URL to any tool where you can edit and specify the URL parameters. You need to define the following parameters in the URL:

Voluum Info: Keep in mind that the postback URL parameters should be replaced with the corresponding values defined by your affiliate network. To find that values you need to refer to the affiliate network documentation.

If you want to use more than one affiliate network, you need to set up the postback URL for each of them.

2a. cid - This is a mandatory parameter used to record a conversion. It is dedicated to passing Voluum's click ID.

2b. payout - This is an optional parameter used to pass the revenue amount per conversion.

2c. txid - This is an optional parameter that you can use to pass a unique transaction ID for each conversion.

3.  When you have defined all the parameters in the postback URL, paste the URL to the
affiliate network.

III. Take a Look at the Conversion Cap Data

Once the offer has been setup with its campaign funnel, you can take a look at your data collected in Voluum:

Voluum Info: When you take a look at your data in Voluum, you need to keep in mind that you might need to wait a few minutes until, firstly, the conversion cap progress bar will show up in the Offers view, secondly, all registered conversions are displayed in the reporting panel. However, the time lag of displaying conversions should not be longer than 3 minutes.

1. In the Offers view there is a Conversion cap column where you can verify the daily cap status of your offers:

Conversion cap disabled
:

When you have not turned on the Conversion cap toggle for a given offer, it means that all your visitors will see only the primary offer. In that case, you will see no statistics in the
Conversion cap column.

Conversion cap activated
:

Daily cap limit set > 0
You should see:

Number of conversions that have been registered till now / Daily cap limit

(both numbers are displayed only for today where today is defined according to the affiliate network time zone set in the Offer setup)

Daily cap reached
You can easily notice that the n
umber of conversions that have been registered till now has reached the Daily cap limit (both numbers are displayed only for today where today is defined according to the affiliate network time zone set in the Offer setup).

Daily cap limit set to 0: When you have paused the primary offer and redirected your visitors to another offer, you will see 0 / 0 in the column for the primary offer. If the redirect offer has the Conversion cap option disabled, there will be no statistics displayed for this offer.

2. In campaign reports you can also see the Conversion cap status of your offers:

2a. Go to the Campaigns view.

2b. In
the Campaigns view double-click a campaign with the offer where the Conversion cap option is activated. The drill-down report for the selected campaign will open in a separate tab.

2c. If not loaded automatically, select the Offers option from the drop-down menu in the bar:

2d. In the
Campaigns drill-down report you will see all offers where there is at least
one registered tracking event. Before starting analyzing the data from the campaign drill-down report take into account the following points:

Voluum Info: A tracking event is a visit or conversion and they might be recorded with different timestamp.  The difference between registering the visit and conversion might beIf you go to

Settings > Profile tab, you can find the Conversion registration time reporting option that determines which event triggers a display of your global reporting. If it is the visit, your data gets displayed in the report panel when the first visit is recored for the campaign. Otherwise, it is the conversion.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that all data is always recorded in the Voluum platform.

  • If you have turned on the Conversion cap option for the offer in your campaign funnel, it means that the offer will show up in the drill-down report if only there have been recorded at least one tracking event. In other words, the redirect offer will not be listed in the report unless the daily cap limit for the primary offer is exceeded. Once it has happened, you should see both the primary and redirect offer in the Campaign drill-down report.

  • The Conversion cap status displayed in the column always informs you about the status of the Conversion cap for today according to the affiliate network time zone set in the Offer setup; even if, you might want to change the time range of the Campaign drill-down report. In other words, there are no historical statistics about the previous setups of the Conversion cap option.

  • The time range that you see in the menu bar for the Campaign drill-down report is determined by your global settings. For example, when you have set up the Default time zone in Settings > Profile tab, all Voluum reports, including the Campaign report, will be set according to those time settings. It means that the Campaign drill-down report time zone settings might be different than the time zone settings of the Conversion cap column because the Conversion cap status is always displayed according to the affiliate network time zone defined in the given Offer setup. Thus, if the time zones differ, you might see different numbers in the Conversion cap and  Conversions column.
  • Furthermore, if you have more than one redirect offer in the loop and the offers have been set with different affiliate network time zones, the Conversion cap statuses will be displayed only for today and today will be defined by each of those time zones.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Have more questions about the conversion cap? You might find the answer below:

  • Is there any limit of offers in the chain?
Yes, there is. You can have maximum 10 offers in the redirection chain. If there is a loop of offers that point to each other and daily caps for all the offers in the loop are exceeded, conversions will be added to the primary offer in the loop.
  • What will happen when I change the limit of daily conversions, Daily cap, in the offer's configuration while the campaign is running?

If you change the daily conversion limit in the Daily cap field, the change is immediately applied to the campaign funnel's configuration. In other words, if the newly updated limit allows to add more conversions to the primary offer, all traffic will point to that offer until the daily cap limit is going to be exceeded. Otherwise, visitors will see the redirect offer.
  • My Conversion cap status is 155/150 what means there have been more conversions that I had set in the Daily cap limit. Could you explain why?
Only after the daily cap has been reached, new visitors will be redirected to the redirect offer. However, some visitors can make the conversions much later than the daily cap is activated what might result that the limit is surpassed.
  • What happens when I add conversions to Voluum manually?
If you upload conversions using the Conversion upload option in the Voluum's settings, the conversions will not be included in the daily cap limit.
  • What to do in case of traffic overload?
When there is a sudden increase of traffic, you might experience some delays on triggering the redirection to the other offer. However, the delay should not be larger than 5 minutes.
